Antique John Deere Tractor Pulling. The last 20 or 30 feet.

During the Ramah Colorado prairie town's history celebration, the Rocky Mountain Tractor Pullers and Mark Gabardi put on a one-day vintage tractor pull. The ancient railroad grade through town was prepared for the event, and the strains of a struggling engine drawing a cargo blanketed the area around the old depot once more. I sorry for the video's quality.....

In the mid-fifties, I used to enjoy watching this... tractors were a little older, and a stone boat had grain bags tossed on it quickly by the young bucks... some pulling was done by draft horses... it was neat. It was difficult to adjust to large weights... seeing young men hurl bags quickly gave a genuine sense of how much labor was being done.

I was born in Tripp County, South Dakota in 1950. We had A, B, D, R, 620, 730D, 820 (green dash), and 820 (black dash) before the new generation of power arrived. Those ancient Johnny Poppers were some of the toughest tractors on the market. Listening to the pulling, you can hear them dropping to 300-500 rpm while maintaining the front end off the ground. I've had Tinnitus since I was about eight years old, from pulling full loads all day in the 730s and 820s with no hearing protection.

One time, my father was performing a compression test on his Model A. He pulled one plug and started the engine; it was "pop —- WHOOSH — pop —-WHOOSH" until he tried to insert the compression tester. The first time, he merely held it in like he did with other engines, but when that cylinder fired, it blew the tester out of the hole and spun dad around. Things it took two individuals to keep it together.
